1, Walk them - the walk is for the dog, so if you are running or walking fast and the dog isn't getting the chance to sniff, who is the walk for? Dogs get so much pleasure from sniffing, that if you are pulling them along, they miss that, so if that's you, do two walks, one fast paced and one just for the dog, 20 minutes of sniffing will be equivalent to a couple of miles walk.
Get rid of your retractable lead, and have a conversation with your dog, have a lead that is aproximately 1.5 metres long, they are beside you, but not pulling when they sniff, and don't wrap it around your hand.
If your dog pulls, use a harness, it will still pull but at least it won't be squashing its trachea, and with the right harness and lead, you can feel in control of the walk, but even better still book in for some loose lead lessons.
2, Enrichment - Tiring out a dog isn't just about physical exercise we need to work their brain also, especially if they come from a working breed, collie, cocker spaniel, labrador etc. Enrichment is about taking your dog to their happy place, all dogs have a built in predatory drive, and to use enrichment to tap into that, leads the dog to feeling fulfilled, so for example Labradors, love to chase and catch, hence the reason they love playing with balls, Collie's love puzzle games, as they have to work out how to get the treat out, Staffies love tugging and shredding, cardboard boxes and rope toys all day long. So really important to find out what motivates your dog, lots and lots of ideas on pinterest and utube.
3, Training, dogs love to work, and they love to have boundaries, and the bond you can build with your dog doing 10 - 15 minutes of training every day, not only makes them feel secure and confident, it really helps with your relationship, and you are working on having a well behaved dog.
So its as simple as that, 3 things to ensure you have a well balanced, confident and happy dog.
